PART 2: THE DOCUMENT THEY HID - 1955
When BDcom.CA opened the tin trunk in Rajshahi archive, we expected land deeds. We found File No. 1955/H-47. A labor contract with a thumbprint, not a signature. Dated 8 years AFTER independence.
This is not colonial history. This is Modern Slavery in 1955.
"Article 3: The tenant shall provide 30 days of compulsory labor annually for road and bridge maintenance, without wage, as compensation for land use granted by the Union."
"Article 7: Failure to pay Fitna-rain tax will result in confiscation of harvest and additional 15 days labor levy. No appeal."
1. Forced Labor With A New Name
The British called it Begar. In 1955 they called it "Voluntary Community Contribution". Same work. No pay. If you refused, your family lost land. We tracked 14 families from this single village in the document — all became landless laborers. Their grandchildren are still day laborers in the same Upazila.
2. Land Theft By Paper - The Fitna-Rain Tax
Fitna was not in any British law book. We found no legal order. It was invented locally. If it rained — you paid tax for using rain. If it didn't rain — you paid for "prayers for rain" conducted by the council. The amount was 2 maunds of paddy per acre. Impossible for a sharecropper.
The document shows 28 acres confiscated in one month for this tax.
3. Why 1955? Why Not 1880?
Because history books say slavery ended in 1947. This file proves the system changed its uniform, not its soul. The officers were now local, the stamp was Pakistan Government, but the thumbprint and the forced labor were identical to 1880. This is what we call Modern Slavery Still Serving Humanity.
PART 3: THE COVER-UP AND WHY BDcom.CA IS PUBLISHING IT NOW
The archive register says: "File 1955/H-47 — Destroyed in 1988 flood." It was not destroyed. It was hidden in a private zamindar family almirah. BDcom.CA team was given access for 3 hours.
They Used 3 Lies To Hide It:
- Lie 1: "It was voluntary." — A thumbprint taken by holding a farmer's hand in ink, with a policeman standing behind. No signature, no witness of his choice.
- Lie 2: "It was for development." — The road built by forced labor from this document leads only to the chairman's jute godown, not to the village.
- Lie 3: "It ended long ago." — We visited the village in 2026. The same 14 families are still landless. One elder told us, "We still pay — now they call it chanda."
BDcom.CA Investigation Verdict
Slavery did not end in 1947. It changed its cap. It took off the British pith helmet and put on a local topi. It changed the word from slavery to tax, levy, contribution. Document No. 1955 is the physical proof. BDcom.CA has scanned all 11 pages. We will publish high-resolution copies for researchers and students next week.
Did Your Family Pay Fitna-Rain Tax?
